Where to sell?
So Ive been making and selling jewelry on Etsy since October 2007. Granted Im very appreciative of my sales, but wish they werent so scattered. I must say its the most economic site I have found to post your hand made crafts if you wish to sell. You pay a small fee to post an item (only .20 cents!) and your item lives in your shop for 4 months! Unfortunately, I think there are more sellers on Etsy than buyers. I admit, Im an artist, not a salesman. So it's possible my descriptions and titles for my items are not that attention grabbing. Any ideas?

I also have an etsy shop and sell OOAK beaded jewelry pieces, as well as small crazy quilt bags. My sales are also sporadic, just here and there. I think there are just so many jewelry sellers on Etsy that it's sort of overwhelming when someone goes there to buy. Unless someone is very specific when they do their searches on Etsy, only certain things will be found. I've had my Etsy shop open since Oct 2007. My shop name is nardiesarttowear.Etsy.com - I must say it's fun and keeps me going with my crafts, it keeps me wanting to do more. By the way, your beaded jewelry items are very pretty, and your kits are very interesting.
ReplyDeleteThanks for checking out my stuff! Hmmm.....Im leaning towards the theory its a sellers market..people just dont have the money to buy any luxury items. I wonder though, how many people use Etsy to sneak a peak at new ideas to market for themselves?
ReplyDeleteYou do awesome work too!
I have the same feeling - Etsy is more of a seller's market - and I've heard marketing is the name of the game to get your shop name out there. With jobs being eliminated more and more these days, I think people are finding ways to make money and jewelry making is definitely one of the popular ones. I guess the thing is - the jewelry we make and sell must be unusual, not just run of the mill stringing type. People who shop on Etsy are looking for OOAKs and the unusual.
ReplyDeleteYes! You have to have a certain style or unusual flair to your work. I have tried flea markets and craft shows to have ogglers pick up my pieces, admire them only to turn to one another and say, "my sister makes these! Ill have her make you one for your dinner party!" *ugh*
ReplyDeleteI have read your blogs and I totally agree - jewelry making is fun to do but there are just too many of us out here. My main gripe is - I love doing original seedbeaded pieces and love the unique way they turn out. However - I don't think most people appreciate the time they take to make and they don't get credit for being little works of art. Okay, I admit the little beads are made of glass - but come on, you have to put colors together and come up with the design yourself - especially the freeform designs. And they are truly OOAK - there won't be another one like it anywhere! It really bothered me when at a recent bead show here, I saw some beaded "magic carpet" bracelets for $12 each - those take hours and hours to make! These were from the Phillipines! And at the same show, I saw little beaded amulet bags for around $20 each - anyone who has ever made a beaded amulet bag knows how many hours are involved in making one. I guess it's no wonder our little beaded artworks are so undermined and not taken seriously!
